What inspires you?

I find art very inspiring! Even works that some find unimportant have merit and significance. All art, whether canonical or popular, can be incredibly personal and vulnerable. It represents our humanity—our desire to create and connect. The publishing process is one form of this connection–sharing art with others–and I’m excited to be able to contribute to it.

I was so excited to join Ohlinger Studios as an intern in February 2023. I am currently a senior in high school, but I also attend Muskingum University in New Concord, OH, as a CCP student.

Language is one of my main enthusiasms, but it is not the only art I love. Exploring museums as a child led to a lifelong passion for art history, from the Lascaux Cave paintings to da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine to Alan Moore’s Watchmen comics. My love of cinema is equally expansive, from classics  (such as Wilder’s Double Indemnity and Lynch’s Twin Peaks) to animated works (like Spirited Away). I play violin in both my school’s orchestra and String Sounds, our strolling strings group that requires audition and memorization of music. Sometimes my interests are niche—I have an embarrassingly good command of early 2000s emo songs and of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure’s minor characters. My favorite classes at the moment are French IV and American Literature.

This is actually my second internship! My first was at Muskingum University where, at age 16, I began working as a tutor in the Writing Center. While there, I gained a more thorough understanding of APA and MLA formatting, cover letters and resumes, and stages of the writing process. My training also included studying The Elements of Style, The Bedford Guide for Writing Tutors, and Spunk and Bite (Arthur Plotnik’s critique of The Elements of Style).

During my internship with Ohlinger, I am eager to learn more about market research, proofing educational content, and building lessons in digital platforms. Ohlinger has already shown itself to be a company that cares about the content it creates and the workflows and camaraderie that contribute to its goals.

This fall, I will attend Ohio University, where I plan to major in the arts. OU has sentimental value to me. I am a child of academics and artists. My grandmother and both of my parents attended Ohio University, so I grew up hearing stories of their adventures (which all were wonderfully strange and fantastically unprintable). I am looking forward to being a third-generation Bobcat!
